British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
