The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
