Each time a significant honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored that year
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
