Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
