Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
